Abstract | Higher education diplomas in Germany undergo grade inflation (vgl. Wissenschaftsrat 2010, 7). Due to the absence of an official school grade statistic in Germany the longitudinal development of A-level grades have not been investigated. The analysis of the Konstanzer Studierendensurvey showed a fall of the average grades from 2,7 in 1972 to 2,1 in 2008. These changes cannot be attributed to the student body composition, selectivity at the entrance to university or differences between the German federal states but is presumably a result of curricula reforms, changes in school culture and the school teacher ratio.
