Abstract	Doping prevention is a term that is being used more and more often by sport functionaries as well as by politicians. The international sporting community largely denied the existence of a serious doping problem until the turn of the twenty-first century, but a series of high-profile doping scandals including Ben Johnson's detection in 1988 and the Festina affair in 1998 changed that. Denial was no longer a viable strategy. The media outcry made the sports governing bodies realize that new and more efficient approaches to anti-doping, including doping prevention, had to be developed in order to save the credibility of sport. The need for preventive work, in particular, has become more obvious with the recent development of preventive measures in related fields in public health such as drug use in the wider society as well as campaigns against other forms of behaviour, including violent behaviour, which involve significant health risks. In this chapter I will first examine the different conceptions that have underpinned different kinds of preventive strategies. After this theoretical section I then present the results of my own studies about doping prevention work in the field of competitive sports, before finally discussing the consequences of different prevention strategies.
