AbstractIn school, grammar is commonly considered to be a system of rules based on a strict dichotomy of right and wrong. This neglects the fact that there are many linguistic phenomena that, beyond the mere notion of grammaticality, exhibit different degrees of acceptability. An empirical domain that clearly illustrates this is the variable word order in German. While the linearization of constituents in the so-called middle field is governed only by a few genuine grammatical rules, various constraints on linearization are responsible for the fact that the different word order options range from perfectly acceptable via less acceptable to almost unacceptable. Making use of both corpus data and acceptability judgments, this paper seeks to determine which word order patterns are actually dominant in natural language use. The analysis of the collected data clearly illustrates the strong interaction between the different constraints on linearization as well as the gradual nature of acceptability they induce. Even though this is by now a canonical topic of general linguistic theory, it is not reflected in any way in schoolbooks. An analysis of various textbooks for German classes shows that the way in which they address the word order gives the impression that the linearization in German is governed by relatively strict rules.
