| Abstract | What should schools look like? What should children learn at school? How can curricula be organised? How can we assess students? These are only some questions, that have been raised in recent years against the background of the rapidly changing world of the 21st centruy. For a long time the "3Rs" formed the basis of educational programmes: skills in reading, writing and arithmetic were the foundation of school curricula. The article from "The Independent on Sunday" reports on an interesting approach by Bedford Academy, one of the first schools in the UK which have picked up the "KIPP" (Knowledge is Power Programme) scheme, a scheme that is particularly focused on character building. Students are accepted regardless of prior academic record, conduct or social background. The following suggestion can be useful in a sequence of lessons dealing with aspects of education but also with social issues. (Verlag). |
