Abstract | The purpose of this review is to provide a systematic analysis of studies investigating how university students use e-books for their studies. This review synthesizes user numbers, advantages and disadvantages, performance, eye fatigue and reading strategies for electronic books and printed books. Findings from 35 analyzed studies do not show any advantage either for e-books or printed books. Furthermore, the results of this review do not show performance differences between students who used a printed book or an e-book. As a main argument for using electronic books, students argued that electronic texts are permanently available and accessible. Performance measures in some of the reviewed studies do not show advantages for one of the two reading-media. Printed books are also preferred in some of the reviewed studies. "Tangibility" and the sensory aspect of printed books were mostly cited in one study for preference for print books. Results from three studies indicate that reading an e-book causes greater eye fatigue than reading a printed book. Future research addressing the use of e-books at schools is needed. (DIPF/Orig.). |
