Abstract | The aim of this review is to identify trends and patterns and to categorize research on teaching in physical education (RT-PE). This review focuses on research on instructional theory and research that focuses on teaching that has been published in the last two years. In order to report the research in an efficient manner the authors have categorized it and provide a limited analysis on selected data due to space constraints. There are three major sub-areas of physical education pedagogy research: curriculum, teacher education and research on teaching. This review will focus on research on teaching in physical education. It is important to note trends in research as a means to predict the direction of future studies as well as gaining a better understanding of the field. The authors have categorized the research into the following sections: teaching effectiveness; research on attitude and motivation; research on physical activity; instrument development research; and finally new and emerging trends in research. Some studies fall into more than one category. While there may be an overlap with research on curriculum or teacher education, the authors have limited the discussion to studies that focus on processes and learning outcomes in physical education.
