Abstract | The Norwegian Nobel Committee's award of the Peace Prize for 2012 to the European Union (EU) relied heavily on historical arguments about its past contributions to peace. This article argues that the Committee tapped into a specific understanding of European history, a narrative which itself is part and parcel of the European integration process. Starting from broad definition of history didactics, the articles delineates how the Council of Europe and the EU have utilized a wide array of didactical tools, including textbook reform and the public use of history to legitimate the political drive for integration. Since history is so central to the argument that the EU has created peace, the article highlights how the reasoning by the Nobel Committee can be used to problematize the history of the EU in the auditorium. The article concludes that the 2012 Peace Prize can be understood as the high point of a decades-long effort to use history didactics to promote European integration.
