Abstract | The data collection of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) allows us to describe educational careers of immigrants and their descendants across their life course. To consider educational patterns for different immigrant groups and generations, it is necessary to identify the immigrant population in an adequate way. The NEPS provides a wide range of measures that researchers may apply in ways consistent with their research interests. This contribution illustrates one possible approach to identifying different immigrant groups and generations. It is based on information on the country of birth of the target person and of her or his parents and grandparents. The generated variables are part of various NEPS data sets. In addition to describing their makeup, the paper includes descriptive results on the distributions for the first waves of three starting cohorts: Kindergarten, Grade 5, and Grade 9. (Orig.). |
