Abstract | This theory to practice article introduces writing as a method of enquiry, which assists adult English language learners in the goal-directed activity of completing their Cultural and Linguistic Autobiography (CLA) project, one component of their academic writing course in a community college ESL programme. By focusing on a series of 'chapter prompts' completed by the learners coupled with the epilogue chapter of selected students, the author highlights the concept of writer identity (i.e. autobiographical self, discoursal self, and self as author) as it relates to the learners' self-assessment of what they had gained from completing the CLA.
