| Abstract | "Due to a globalized economy the acquisition of intercultural skills by stays abroad is considered as a desirable object of education by both, economy and politics, and is supported by European programs such as Socrates, Erasmus and Comenius. In fact, we can observe a steady increase of studies abroad in the last two decades. But at the same time, the vast majority of students do not study abroad and can obviously nonetheless compete on the Labor market. This raises the question whether studying abroad has unfolded socializing dynamics by its institutionalization, which is reflected in an internalized norm to study abroad. In this paper, both theoretical considerations and empirical results on the conditions and effects of a norm to study abroad are discussed. On the basis of cross-sectional survey data of students of economics and engineering at the University of Siegen possible learning effects by mobility experience and institutions are identified in a first step. In a second step, the importance of the learned norm for the intention to study abroad is specified. Overall, direct mobility experience is the strongest predictor of a subjective norm to study abroad and this norm, in turn, determines the intention to study abroad at most, compared to an expected personality development as well as to expected career success. The results are finally discussed in terms of possible effects on individual mobility biographies and social inequality." (author's abstract). |
