| Abstract | Do tasks fulfil their task? In analysing publications on task based learning (TBL) when it was already an established mainstream concept in foreign language teaching, this article discusses TBL's positions on 'focus on form' and 'focus on language' and wonders why it is still difficult to find 'exercise' without a negative attribute attached. The founding myth - freeing the classroom from boring and inefficient activities introduced by the grammar translation method and instead estbalishing motivating, holistic, communicative activities relevant to the everyday life of the learners - still seems to prevent more wide-ranging questions to be asked about the functionality of dealing with form in relation to previous experiences of the learners, tragets, institutional constraints, ot the appropriateness of different types of activities which help learners to acquire form. The article proceeds by analysing the types of activities which seem to be acceptable for TBL when dealing with form, and the point in time assumed appropriate to deal with it within this approach. Finally, the question is asked whether TBL by behaving as if it were a universal approach to foreign language learning and ignoring culturarlly determined learning traditions and local context factors, is in danger of becoming a global method with unwanted side effects.
