Abstract	Results of research conducted in the field of EFL have generally concluded that the use of authentic materials in the classroom leads to increased motivation and an enjoyable learning environment. The use of comics in this context has also been favourably welcomed as they can provide an entertaining source of input and are easily obtainable. In conclusion, their use in the classroom appears to be an excellent resource for any teacher wishing to support students' learning through authentic materials. After a brief overview of notions such as authenticity, intercultural learning, learner autonomy, and the theory pertaining to the use of comics in the classroom, this paper seeks to critically evaluate the afore-mentioned conclusion on the basis of a case study with 150 learners, who completed a questionnaire on the use of comics in the language classroom. The results show that the initial assumption on the usefulness of comics is partly invalid since the popularity of comics is strongly related to students' age and interest, for instance. In our essay, we are going to argue that autonomous language learning could be a practical solution to this dilemma.
