Abstract	Schoolbooks for German instruction at the first level of secondary education (Sekundarstufe I) in a variety of school systems (1980-2011) are analysed with respect to how they treat the topic of migration and how they take account of linguistically and culturally heterogeneous societies and student populations in their presentation of reality. Sociological theories of the stranger constitute the theoretical framework for concepts such as migrant, stranger, and other. As indicators of this treatment of migration and forms of representation of the stranger, texts, paratexts, motives, topics, and deictic elements were used. The analyses of three generations of schoolbooks manifest a shift in migration discourse which is interpretable as a reaction to changes in migration processes, politics with regard to foreigners, and views of the media. To further clarify this shift, in addition three older schoolbooks and their more recent editions are compared with one another in terms of diachronic perspective. (DIPF/Orig.).
