Abstract	This article wishes to pursue the manifold connections between demographic development and the development of the labour market. Initially, the next (second) section deals with the previous affects of demographic change on the labour market and future affects which are foreseeable from a present-day perspective. Special emphasis is given to the development of qualifications. In the third section, the changes on the supply side are confronted with the trends in demands for qualified labour. When one looks at the parameters 'unemployment' and 'wages', the current evidence suggests that the drifting apart of low and high earners that is already unmistakable, as well as of persons with low qualifications and those with higher ones, will become more accentuated. The future trends and the challenges resulting herefrom are the subject of the fourth section. The article closes with consequences for labour market policy and discusses possible options for action which include the tapping of additional personnel reserves, a new expansion in education, along with efforts to facilitate the social stabilisation of employment (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku).
