| Abstract | "This paper explores interconnections between American and German sociology in the 1930s. It focuses on two German sociologists, Willy Gierlichs and Walter Beck, who spent the 1932-33 school year as participants in an unusual American educational experiment: the 'Seminar on the Impact of Culture on Personality'. Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and held at Yale University, this Seminar was led by anthropologist Edward Sapir and sociologist John Dollard; invited to participate were 13 European and Asian social scientists-each chosen to represent a particular 'contemporary culture'. Whereas most countries had one representative, Germany had two, for Beck, a graduate of the University of Leipzig with an interest in criminology, was chosen to represent 'Northern German Culture' while Gierlichs, a disciple of sociologist Leopold von Wiese from the University of Cologne, represented 'Southern German Culture'. My paper uses records from this Seminar, Beck's and Gierlichs' professional writings, and archival materials found in Germany and the U.S. to consider the working relationship between American and German sociology in this crucial decade."
