Abstract | The article focuses on the definition and measurement of listening comprehension construct. It begins with some remarks on the importance of listening comprehension for (everyday) communication. It then briefly describes three different approaches to defining test constructs, favouring an interactive approach which takes both linguistic competencies and task characteristics into account. Subsequently, pertinent psycholinguistic aspects are dealt with in some detail, including the relationship between listening and reading comprehension processes, the dimensionality of listening comprehension and the importance of understanding difficulty-generating task characteristics. In the final section, the author concludes that the ability to process realistic spoken language automatically in real time is at the core of listening comprehension construct and should hence be the primary focus of assessment tasks.
