Abstract | The subject of the wisdom of old age would be very incompletely addressed if the perspectives and reflections on experience of older persons themselves were not heard directly. The author of this essay draws from three sources: the work of the Holocaust Museum in Farmington Hills, Michigan, near Detroit, the various stages of his own life experience ranging over nine decades, and the great texts of the cultural tradition. He sees the knowledge of an older person as a personal achievement only in a limited sense. As a survivor of the Holocaust, an active and engaged contemporary, a college teacher and a literary scholar he is deeply concerned with the communication of historical knowledge and human values from one generation to the next.
