| Abstract | Questions about the state or nature of the "German psyche" or German identity have always been at the core of newspaper articles about German issues published in the United Kingdom or the USA. There has always been a strong and enduring tradition of extremely critical, occasionally Germanophobic and cliché-ridden observations in the press - oscillating between fears of a racist, xenophobic German monster rearing its ugly head again and a sometimes overt admiration of German industrial might and the ongoing "economic miracle". Recently, arguably initiated by the relaxed and joyful atmosphere the country presented itself to foreign visitors during the 2006 World Cup, a new, more advantageous image of Germany has been evolving. Rather, the contours of a New Germany are evolving. This shift in perception is reflected in the online article Germany from the New York Times. The article, last updated in March 2011, was written by several journalists and the part chosen constitutes circa one third of a national profile describing recent changes in politics and the economy.
