| Abstract | London is the capital of England and the UK, covering over 620 square miles. It is the most populous city in the European Union with over 7 million inhabitants. Almost one third of Londoners were born outside the UK - around 2.3 m. of London's population consists of a broad variety of different ethnic groups all living together in the capital. The text, an article taken from the British newspaper The Guardian, deals with the question of the attitude Londoners have developed towards their immigrants. It was written by the award-winning British journalist Leo Benedictus who spent months travelling across the capital, locating and visiting the immigrant communities that give the city its vibrancy and, as emphasized in the article, its great variety of food. Due to the length of the text the examination material should be used in a "Leistungskurs" in Year 12 or 13. The suggested assignments cover the four fields of comprehension, analysis, evaluation and creative writing. (Verlag, adapt.). |
