Abstract | The article deals with the question, raised for instance by Jan Assmann, whether biblical monotheism has a genuine affinity to intolerance and violence. Following the literary history of the Old Testament it is shown that monotheism of post-exilic times is exclusive as well as inclusive with respect to other gods and nations. The traditions of Israelite faith are pluralistic and show inner tenses in their concepts of God and world. YHWH reveals his grace to Israel and mankind and at the same time remains reclusive and incomprehensive. So, the bible itself contains and invites critical hermeneutics to prevent intolerance. |
