Abstract | The author of this chapter is currently seconded from the British University in Dubai to be the Director of Disability Services in the Dubai Government's Community Development Authority. She is a researcher/practitioner/advocate who is committed to improving the social inclusion of people with disabilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where she lives and works. In 2004 she started the UAE Down's Syndrome Support Group, which uses sport as one domain through which young people can engage with wider opportunities and greater equity of life chances. The chapter is significant because it addresses the importance of recognising intersecting axes of oppression culture, gender and disability - as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by young Muslim women with an intellectual disability.
