| Abstract | In her article, the author presents and discusses selected issues concerning text comprehension and intelligibility. She pays particular attention to the processes involved in understanding foreign language texts (aphorisms), using the most established text-comprehension models. Moreover, she describes the so-called "intermediate stages" as well as the role of presupposition and inference in the process of understanding. Looking at Stanislaw Jerzy Lec's ideas about the comprehension and interpretation of aphorisms, she presents the results of the research she conducted among German language students. It transpired that some learners encountered difficulties in the processes understanding and interpreting foreign language aphorisms. The difficulties may result from the following factors: an inability to understand words, a cognitive conflict, an inability to connect assumptions and to grasp implicit meanings. In addition, problems with elaboration may occur. (Verlag, adapt.). |
