Abstract	"Der Beitrag geht davon aus, dass die Bildungssoziologie innerhalb der Bildungsforschung durch gesellschaftstheoretische Impulse stärker profiliert werden kann. In Abgrenzung zu einem etablierten Konzept, der Theorie des kulturellen Kapitals (Pierre Bourdieu), wird die These von Bildung als Selbstbeschreibungsformel des Erziehungssystems (Niklas Luhmann) vorgestellt. Der Begriff der Bildung wird, anders als in der Kapitaltheorie, nicht durch einen soziologischen Begriff ersetzt. Er wird vielmehr im Konzept der Selbstbeschreibungsformel generalisiert. Dies erlaubt die Analyse seiner kommunikativen Funktionen und den Vergleich mit den Selbstbeschreibungsformeln anderer Funktionssysteme (zum Beispiel Kapital oder Staat). Diese Konzeption ermöglicht unter anderem eine Neubestimmung des Verhältnisses von soziologischer Analyse und Kritik des Bildungssystems. Die Analyse kann die Notwendigkeit von Einheitsbeschreibungen des Erziehungssystems mit vollziehen und zugleich die Idealisierungen hinterfragen, die im Rahmen solcher Einheitsbeschreibungen anfallen. Das Konzept der Selbstbeschreibung erlaubt, Bildungskritik und Gesellschaftskritik präziser zu unterscheiden als bislang geschehen." (Autorenreferat). "In this contribution the author asserts that the sociology of education may improve its profile within the realm of educational research by considering Niklas Luhmann's theory of society. In juxtaposition to the established construct of cultural capital (Pierre Bourdieu), he introduces Luhmann's view of Bildung (education) as the education system's own form of self-description. In contrast to the theory of capital, the concept of Bildung is not substituted with a sociological notion. Instead, Bildung is generalized within the concept of the form of self-description. This enables an analysis of its communicative functions and a comparison of its form of self-description to that of other functional systems (for instance, capital or state). Among other things, adopting this vantage point makes it possible to revise our understanding of the relationship between sociological analysis of the education system and criticism of the same. Such a perspective acknowledges the necessity of the education system's description of its unity, but also supports careful investigation of the idealizations that arise in conjunction with such a description. The concept of self-description allows us to distinguish between critique of the system of education and critique of society with much greater precision." (author's abstract).
