Abstract | The authors present the methodology and pedagogy of Elementary Mathematical Modeling as a one-semester course in an arts core. They focus on the elementary models in finance and business. The main mathematical tools in this course are difference equations and matrix algebra. The authors integrate computer technology and cooperative learning into this inquiry-based learning course where students work in small groups on carefully designed activities and utilize available software to support problem solving and understanding of real life situations. They emphasize the use of graphical and numerical techniques, rather than theoretical techniques, to investigate and analyze the behaviour of the solutions of difference equations. A non-traditional and efficient way of introducing models from finance and economics illustrates the approach. The authors also present a model of supply and demand with a lag time, called the cobweb theorem in economics. A research project on a technique of removing chaotic behavior from a chaotic system is introduced. The papers in this issue are enhanced versions of the presentations given at the Second Computer Algebra and Dynamic Geometry Systems in Mathematics Education (CADGME) conference at the University of Linz, Austria, in July 2009.
