Abstract | In a longitudinal study with 289 third grade pupils, the effects of a short-term training program to enhance social-emotional competence are investigated. During three units of 45 minutes each, the intervention group was tutored in non-aggressive communication and understanding of emotions. An attention control group was taught biology for the same amount of time. A third group received no special instruction. Over a time span of ten weeks the intervention group showed significant increases in interpreting facial expressions, in recognizing emotions in conflict situations and in describing socially competent behaviour, and in these respects they proved by far superior to both other groups. Comparing the children of the intervention group to the mere control group, their teachers rated the intervention group as clearly more pro-socially oriented and less affected by emotional problems.
