Abstract | Hardly a day goes by on which the international news does not mention incidents or developments related to the war in Afghanistan. Since the start of the 'Enduring Freedom' campaign in 2001 this war has permanently been in the focus of television news as well as newspaper footage. Over the last few years many attempts have been made to settle the conflict, the most recent of which was the International Conference on Afghanistan in London on January 28, 2010. A newspaper article from "The Times" lends itself ideally to introducing the pupils to the results of the conference as well as to the various reactions to it. The two leading articles from "The Independent" and "The Telegraph" show two basically different views of the future of the conflict. The authors' suggestions can be used in a series of lessons about the peace-keeping role of the United Nations, the USA and other Western countries. (Verlag, adapt.). |
