Abstract | Although giftedness is an upcoming issue, there is little empirical evidence on the development of highly gifted persons up to and in adulthood. Therefore, this topic was chosen for a psychological seminar at the University of Cologne with special emphasis on connecting theory and practical experience. In the framework of life-span-developmental psychology and theories of giftedness the students set up questions to conduct structured interviews. Interview partners were 16 adults (23-55 years old), recruited in the German association for highly gifted persons which is called "MENSA". The subjects' experiences with kindergarten, school, social life and self concept were very different, but most of them emerged as successful and content adults. Regarding school there were some negative ratings (e.g. lack of formative teachers) pointing to the necessity of further sensitization of teachers. (DIPF/Orig.). |
