Abstract	Seven countries are compared with respect to their education and counselling of their gifted and talented students under the aspects of societal and situational backgrounds, theoretical concepts, methods etc. It appears that the national systems are fairly unique and represent various stages of development: from narrow to complex definitions and theories of giftedness, from giving advice to personal counselling, from care for limited sectors of the student population to services in all schools, from employing teachers with little training to academically trained counsellors. We gain a fairly comprehensive arsenal of methods of gifted counselling and education, which must be evaluated according to the standards of humanistic democratic education. The situation in Germany is clarified by comparing the measures taken in two federal states with contrasting concepts. Urgent needs are pointed out. (DIPF/Orig.).
