| Abstract | Especially in a European situation, multilingualism finds itself in an awkwardly ambivalent position between proclamations and a steady decline of a real multilingualism comprising more than "globalese" English next to the native tongue. The contribution follows up the apparently deeply internalized reasons for the widespread defensive attitude against multilingualism and tries to uncover the consequences of such defense for the various dimensions of language (knowledge, action, group formation). A factual ban of multilingualism is contrasted with the possibility of multilingualism and the necessity for developing concepts of multilingualism in the transnational communicative contexts, arising exemplarily in a 21st century Europe, is pointed out. As a task and consequence of communicative ethics, the realization of which necessitates the determined political commitment of all citizens, a deontics of multilingualism is being developed.
