A process of familiarization with the body of mathematical symbols is integral to the learning of mathematics. In this study mathematical expressions are investigated, and the principles elicited are discussed especially as they bear on mathematical pedagogy. The evident brevity of these expressions is found to be an especial guiding principle. The ground of this brevity is explored particularly in light of a possible method of applying this notational brevity itself as an integral part of instruction. A teaching schema is then promoted in which a dialectical struggle between the form of these expressions and the development of high quality diagrammatic thinking is encouraged. |
