| Abstract | Proposes an integrative framework of remembering that describes multiple phases of the transition process from memory trace to observable remembering behavior. Also introduces research that demonstrates social influence of various kinds on memory and constitutes a major empirical interface between memory psychology and social psychology. A classification of the major forms of social influence on memory is presented, providing prototypical examples from research concerning social-cognitive, social-motivational, and interpersonal influence as well as research on group and collective memory. It is further discussed whether these phenomena can be attributed to memory or social-psychological theories. Finally, a theoretical framework integrating the findings and describing the transition from memory trace to remembering is introduced. In conclusion, another look is taken at social-memory phenomena from the perspective of the new framework, and implications for social-memory research are discussed. (ZPID). |
