| Abstract | The paper tries to sketch the conceptual framework of the topic of education and social inequality in Eastern Europe. Going back to the classical theory of social inequality as it is explained by Pierre Bourdieu, an author who is today much read in Eastern Europe, the paper develops at first the thesis, that social inequality is reproduced by the school system which distributes some sorts of cultural capital. As in Germany the debate about educational and social inequality is closely connected with the question of the selective structures of the school system, in a second step the paper sketches the structural changes in a number of school systems in Eastern Europe in order to find out if this factor is relevant for the growing inequality within the schools of this area. A glance at the PISA results of the countries in question may give some indicators showing if Bourdieu's conceptual framework explaining the correlation between social status and success in schools is adequate for the school systems in Eastern Europe. Finally a case study about the relevance of the topic in Polish educational reviews shows the different factors causing inequality in schools discovered by Polish scholars themselves. (DIPF/Orig.). |
