Abstract	Following a survey of efforts to rescue children from war-torn Europe and the current status of research on this topic, the example of the eleven OSE Children's Homes in France (1938-40), housing 1600 children, is chosen to learn more about the educational principles and arrangements that helped traumatized children to cope. Ernst Papanek (1900-1973), a Social-democratic educator who had fled Austria, combined three major influences in his work: the Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler, the principles of School Reform developed in Austria, and progressive political ideas. His approach resulted in fostering both the development of individual children and their ability to take on the responsibilities of "coadministration" of the community. The article bases on Ernst Papanek's own reports, reflections, and studies about the social and psychological situation of children in exile as well as on the recollections of several participants in the story.
