Abstract | The harnessing of the electric power associated with space weather storms is discussed. A simple system based on a large-scale coil located at high latitudes is devised and the power output of the system for a sample storm is calculated. It is shown that independently of the resistances of the conductors used in the coil and the number of turns in the system the maximum output of the system is restricted to the 1-10 MW range, which is comparable to the maximum output of a single large wind turbine. © 2009 American Association of Physics Teachers. |
