Abstract | [This] "report provides a science-based perspective for how Hungary can transform its education system to move from 'hit and miss' policies to establishing universal high standards, from uniformity in the system to embracing diversity, from managing inputs and a bureaucratic approach to education towards devolving responsibilities and enabling outcomes, from talking about equity to delivery equity, and from a system where schools no longer receive prefabricated wisdom but take initiatives on the basis of data and best practice." It comprises the following contributions: 1) Mária Herzog: Encouraging early child development; 2) József Nagy: Renewing primary education; 3) Benö Csapó: The second stage of public education and the "Matura"; 4) Ilona Liskó: Vocational training and early school leavers; 5) Gábor Havas: Equality of opportunity, desegretation; 6) Valéria Csépe: Caring for children with special educational needs and their rehabilitation; 7) Gábor Kertesi: The assessment and evaluation of educational institutions, school accountability; 8) Andrea Kárpáti: Teacher training and professional development; 9) Benö Csapó: The scientific foundations of training and learning; 10) Júlia Varga: Institutional structure and funding in education; 11) János Köllö: Employment policy measures to promote education reforms; 12) Judit Lannert: The effects of demographic change on the public education budget.
