Abstract | "Inglehart (1990, 2005) considers values to be one's reactions to changes in the environment. According to Rokeach (1973), values are an element of culture, an image of the desirable that might not be directly expressed in human behaviour. The aim of this article is to examine which values which pupils believe are upheld in Estonian schools; and in two phases to compare different school levels and schools with different languages of instruction, Estonian and Russian. In 2004, questionnaires were given to 7th-12th grade students from 65 schools and in 2006, to 4th-6th grade students from 9 schools. Students evaluated 14 school values. The results show that students think that schools consider the most important values to be academic success, politeness, and honesty. Students considered less important such school values as enjoyment of school, tolerance, and health." (author's abstract). |
