Abstract	As the editors of this collection and many of the chapter authors point out, building pedagogies of inclusion happens not only in schools but also in families and communities. Efforts to overturn implicit and explicit practices of exclusion are most successful when they combine the efforts of teachers, students, parents, and community members. This book is exemplary and unusual among books published on education in that it attends to each of these stakeholders and to their interconnections. There are essays in this collection on curricular and pedagogical practices carried out in schools, essays that emphasize the importance of listening to the voices of parents of students who live in historically excluded and disenfranchised communities; and essays that emphasize the importance of community involvement and even of community control over what happens in classrooms. These essays, collectively, raise complex questions about the interplay of the local and the global in the production and experience of pedagogies of exclusion. Globalization, though a relatively new term, is not a new phenomenon. As many of the authors in this collection point out, contemporary problems of exclusion have deep historical roots in global phenomena such as slavery and colonialism. Contemporary forms of the global circulation of capital, policies, and people exacerbate old problems and create new ones. But they also can create new opportunities and introduce new ideas and possibilities. (DIPF/Orig.).
