| Abstract | The first part of this paper focuses on the most important theories regarding stress and on its explanatory models: the physiological model, the causal model, and the stimuli theory, the resource conservation model, the interactionist-ecological model (S.Cohen) and the interactionist model based on the transactional theory (R.S.Lazarus and S. Folkman). A parallel is drawn between the transactional model and that of the health psychology. The second part is an analysis of the problematic issue of 'stress measurement' and of the stress management mechanisms (coping mechanisms). The characteristics of problem-focused coping and of emotion focused coping are analyzed. In order to reduce stress the potential stress factors must be identified, personal resources must be realistically assessed and the stress management techniques must be well known, all these leading to the activation of efficient coping mechanisms.
