Abstract | The chapter considers the relations between education, economics and cultural identity or citizenship, as important in determining the relation between education and societal change. In analysing these relations, it is argued that the often neglected heritage in modern educational theory still offer us useful concepts. However, the tradition of Bildung emphasizing autonomy and self -reflection is critised as Bildung may partly be seen as a functional theory responding to the needs of modernity. The article differs between four models of how education and societal change are related and argues in favour of a non-affirmative position. The arguments are exemplified by contemporary policy changes in education. (DIPF/Orig.). |
