Abstract | This state-of-the-art volume examines the relationships between brain development and behavior in typically developing children. The contributors are leading authorities who integrate theories and methods from multiple disciplines, emphasizing what research reveals about ways to support all children's learning and healthy development. Part I reviews the methodological and theoretical foundations of the new science of mind, brain, and education. Parts II and III present innovative cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that shed light on brain-behavior connections from infancy through the school years and adolescence. Chapters explore the complex interplay of neurobiological and environmental influences in the development of memory, language, reading, inhibitory control, and other core aspects of cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. A hallmark of the volume is its integration of multiple sources of information and levels of analysis, using tools ranging from child interviews and standardized tests to structural and functional neuroimaging. Throughout, the authors highlight the potential implications of their work for understanding children's diverse educational needs and providing optimal learning experiences. (DIPF/Orig.). |
