| Abstract | The essay explores issues of technology and globalisation in utopian fiction written in English. It argues that postcolonial utopian literature addressing technological problems has been shaped by different stages of development, all of which demonstrate the complexity of the modernising processes involved. The first, nineteenth century phase is marked by a high degree of faith in the potentialities of technological process and the possibilities it offers for a wide range of British colonies. During the second stage, technology comes to embody the destructive forces of Western imperialism and rationality; at this stage, writers employ images of modern technology as metaphors for strategies of control and containment applied by colonising powers. In the last phase, global technologies are afforded more optimistic traits. Writers of utopian and speculative fiction now seek to transform and punctuate Western concepts and technology by adapting them to the local needs of their own societies. (Verlag, adapt.). |
