Abstract | An important infrastructural condition of the European integration and the economic development of Hungary is the high-level foreign language competence of the individuals. In consequence of the decisive political change of 1989, in the last fifteen years then have been radical changes in the demand on foreign language competence. In the Southern Transdanubian Region of Hungary [the authors] carried out a survey with the help of questionnaires and in-depth interviews in 1999-2000. The aim of the survey was to assess the extent to which employers and employees need and use foreign language competence and the results and problems of foreign language teaching and to analyse the information based on a wide range of data collected. The aim of the analysis was to provide data for the development and improvement of the organisation, content and structure of foreign language teaching and in-service training.
