Abstract | The Commemoration Centre in Düsseldorf, founded 1987, is situated midtown and was constituted as a cultural institute decisively dedicated to present "prosecution and opposition" in Düsseldorf 1933-1945 and thereby keep in public memory the victims of the Nazi-Regime and those who opposed to it. Though no "authentic" locality in the historical sense of it, and though small in space, the Centre annually attracts some 20.000 visitors. Thanks to its specific permanent exhibition and by a broad variety of initiatives and courses offered to young and old, the Centre is well established and by now has become an integral part of the historical memory of the region. - Angela Genger depicts the locality (1), outlines the educational approach, which is that of transforming local history into collective memory (2), describes the permanent exhibition along the course of its historical sequences (3), and gives some examples of the political and cultural initiatives and educational actions undertaken additionally (4); Genger finally casts an eye on the visitors young and old to foster the hope of a continuing interest in the Centre and an open mind towards its political moral and message (5).
