| Abstract | The concept of progression traditionally has been applied to grammar in foreign language teaching and learning; and since the communicative approach, a functional-notional progression has not only complemented but also determined the grammatical progression. However, it only relates to a rather limited notion of pragmatic context for speech events in particular situations; it does not take into consideration the implicit cultural knowledge of language uses and the cultural conceptions inscribed in a language. Therefore the article argues for the explicit and long-term inclusion of a broader 'cultural progression' in the process of foreign language teaching and learning, centred on experiential learning and aimed at the understanding of elements of the foreign culture on the basis of an intercultural level that is being constructed by the foreign language learner during the learning process.
