Abstract	"In den vergangenen zwei Jahren hat der 2004 von der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung eingerichtete Steuerungskreis 'Europäisches Sozialmodell' intensiv erörtert, wie neben der wirtschaftlichen Integration auch die soziale Dimension Europas gestärkt werden kann. Diesem Kreis gehören neben WissenschaftlerInnen auch politische EntscheidungsträgerInnen sowie VertreterInnen aus Wirtschaft und Verbänden an. Die Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung gibt mit dem vorliegenden Papier den aktuellen Diskussionsstand der Arbeitsgruppe wider. Dieses Diskussionspapier analysiert wesentliche Politikfelder, denen in der nächsten Zeit gerade auch aus der Perspektive der deutschen Reformdebatte erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit zukommen sollte: mögliche Optionen für eine europäische Beschäftigungs- und Bildungspolitik, die Modernisierung sozialer Sicherungssysteme und die Familienpolitiken im europäischen Kontext. Darüber hinaus wird die Rolle des sozialen Dialogs auf europäischer Ebene beleuchtet. Dabei ist unbestreitbar, dass die notwendigen Reformen und Anpassungen nicht mehr allein durch nationale Politik bewältigt werden können. Wie bereits in anderen Politikfeldern wirkt die europäische Ebene mittlerweile auch in der Sozialpolitik in den nationalen Raum hinein. Daher sollten einzelstaatliche und europäische Akteure bestmöglich zusammenwirken, um den aktuellen und kommenden Herausforderungen gewachsen zu sein." (Textauszug). "In 2004, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung established the Steering Committee for the 'European Social Model' and during the past two years, its members have made a tremendous effort to find out how economic integration and strengthening the European social dimension can be reconciled. The committee consisted of scientists, political decision-makers and representatives of the industry and associations. In this paper, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung would like to present the current state of discussions in the working group. The paper at hand analyses the essential political areas that are likely to become the centre of attention soon, especially with regard to the debate on reforms in Germany: feasible options for a European employment and education policy, the modernisation of social security systems and family policies in a European context. Furthermore we will highlight the role of Social Dialogue on a European scale. However, it is beyond doubt that necessary reforms and adaptations cannot be coped with by national policy alone. As is the case with other political fields already, the European level has started to have an impact on national social policies. Therefore, national and European players ought to ensure optimum cooperation to be able to rise to current and future challenges." (excerpt).
