Abstract	The conference on "The non-governmental educational institutions in Eastern Europe", which was organized by the German society for East European studies from Nov. 25-27, 2004, discussed the radical changes in education in this region in the last fifteen years under Western influence. The 16 reports discussed the development from the state monopoly to market orientation in education. There is a change in paradigm from the state school to private education. The educational sovereignty of the state is reduced especially in the field of vocational and tertiary education. But there are different tendencies in the individual countries. The experts came to the conclusion that there are limits of the reduction of the public authorities' role, because otherwise the very aim of education cannot be achieved. (DIPF/Orig.).
