| Abstract | The approach known in France as éveil aux langues (which is not completely synonymous with what is generally called in English language awareness) is characterised by the use of strategies, stressing the pupils' sensibility for linguistic diversity. It strengthens their positive attitudes towards languages and their knowledge of them, increasing their interests for languages. It teaches them to observe and analyse language structures, uses and acquisition in order to make language learning easier and more successful. Éveil aux langues gave birth to at least two initiatives supported by the European Union and the Council of Europe in which up to sixteen countries were involved. There is no doubt about the positive results of éveil aux langues in the areas which had originally been focussed on, as Janua Linguarum has proven. Moreover, they can easily be fitted to other socio-linguistic contexts and educational situations. (Verlag, adapt.). |
