| Abstract | The paper gives an overview of factors that influence the choice of foreign languages by learners, parents and schools which should also be taken into consideration by curriculum planners and be part of foreign language study policies. It provides numerous new data (including hints at methods of data collection) on the strength of these factors, which allow for comparison of the major foreign languages in today's world - with the focus on English and German. The paper comprises perspectives of globalization as well as localization with the former overriding the latter and shows - within the framework of the "global language system" - which conditions of communication favour the rise of a single lingua franca and which work against it. Such conditions are explored on the macro- as well as the microlevel (e.g. numerical, economic or cultural strength of languages vs. rapidly changing language contacts or politeness of language choice in actual communication). The paper also explains why language communities or their countries have a vested interest in maintaining for spreading their language as a subject of foreign language studies and as a medium of communication beyond their own borders and sketches out consequences of gain or loss of such standing for the respective language communities. It finally also touches on pertaining language conflicts and language interests of individuals as well as entire language communities. (Verlag, adapt.). |
