| Abstract | The essay is an introduction to a new novelistic genre which has emerged over the last twenty years and is characterized by the integration of non-verbal and non-narrative modes into novelistic narration. In the novels that are investigated in the article, graphics, photographs, diagrams and drawings, but also (the reproduction of) non-novelistic texts like newspaper articles, advertisements, obituaries, handwritten letters of lists and tables form an integral part of the narrative. The visual elements in particular can be regarded as importing visual culture into a conventional literary genre. The essay argues that the multi-modal novel mirrors common cultural and signifying practices and that it challenges traditional ways of reading and teaching literary texts in the classroom. Multimodal novels enrich the literary classroom, but reading and teaching them also requires the integration and education of visual, intermedial and transmodal competencies. (Verlag, adapt.). |
