AbstractHigher education has emerged as a field and analysis in the past half century. Its growth has been remakable and its relevance to informing policy and practice concerning higher education worldwide is increasing. Mapping the field of higher education worldwide shows that the bulk of research and analysis takes place in North America and to a lesser extent in Western Europe, but that there has been significant growth in China and Japan. In other parts of the world, including Africa, most of Latin America, and the Arab region, there is little work on higher education. Higher education is, of course, not an academic discipline but rather an interdisciplinary field using the social sciences. This interdisciplinarity strengthens research in the field, but also creates some problems in terms of locating higher education centers in universities. Research in the field takes place in academe, but also in government departments, institutional research offices in universities, and in freestanding research and policy centers and institutes. The communication network for higher education research has become increasingly complex. The number of journals focusing on higher has more than doubled worldwide in the past several decades. Websites, blogs, and other Internet based communication networks have also emerged. This creates some problems of access but also shows the expansion of the field. The communications networks are dominated by the major research producing countries in North America and Western Europe. (HoF/text adopted).
